limerick about mary malone

21 April 1992

During her 1992 visit to South Africa Mary Malone came to Radio South Africa on two occasions as a guest of Paddy O'Byrne. Paddy has a highly popular music programme each weekday. I didn't realise the consequences of these visits to me, particularly the first time Mary spoke on the air; my telephone rang incessantly for three to four days after her visit. Quite obviously Mary Malone was needed by the people throughout the nation, desperate people, hopeful people and those with sad stories to tell.

She has been very well received in this country and her sincere and gentle manner is an ever present part of her persona.

I have met many people from all over the world throughout the years I have worked in Radio South Africa and I would like to say that Mary and her delightful husband Malcolm are without doubt among the few who stand out in my mind in terms of friendliness.

God willing, as Mary would say, I look forward to their next visit to South Africa in a few years time.
